Introduction to NSS
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary public service program in India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. It was launched on 24th September 1969 to instill the idea of social service among college and university students. The primary goal of NSS is to develop a sense of social responsibility, leadership, and community engagement among youth.
Motto of NSS
The motto of NSS is “Not Me, But You”, which reflects selfless service and commitment to society.
Symbol & Badge
The NSS badge consists of:
- A wheel (Rath Chakra): Taken from the Konark Sun Temple, symbolizing movement, progress, and youth dynamism.
- Red color: Represents energy and spirit.
- Blue color: Represents the universe and NSS’s commitment to social service.
Objectives of NSS
- Understand the community and its problems.
- Develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.
- Engage in activities that promote social welfare.
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.
- Develop the ability to handle emergencies and disasters.
- Foster national integration and unity.
Structure of NSS
- NSS Units: Found in schools, colleges, and universities, each unit has 100–200 students.
- Programme Officer (PO): A faculty member responsible for coordinating NSS activities.
- Volunteers: Students who actively participate in NSS programs.
- Regional and National Level Coordination: Monitored by the State Liaison Officers and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
Activities Conducted by NSS
NSS activities are broadly categorized into two types:
Regular Activities (120 hours per year)
- Blood donation camps
- Plantation drives
- Awareness campaigns (health, sanitation, gender equality)
- Cleanliness drives (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan)
- Road safety awareness
- Literacy programs
Special Camping Programs (7-day camps)
- Conducted in rural areas or slums to improve living conditions.
- Activities include community service, village adoption, and social awareness programs.

Who Can Join NSS?
Any student enrolled in a school, college, or university in India can join NSS voluntarily.
